Career corner activities :
Every year the Career corner (Placement Cell of our college) organizes seminars and career-oriented work-shops on a regular basis. Students are provided guidance and information about career options as well as the soft-skills required for this. Companies seek the Training and Placement cell for part-time and full time jobs. Many students have benefited from our various activities. We plan to invite companies for direct campus recruitment from this year.
Another hall-mark of the centre is that it periodically conducts training programmes in soft skill for the deserving students.This year an education fair was held on the campus to guide students on the various professional courses that can be pursued after graduation for better job prospects. Sectors like Aviation, Banking, Insurance Management, and Consultancy were a part of the activities this year. Students were also provided information and guidance about examinations for studying abroad.

2. 9 students placed with Tata Consultancy Services, Gandhinagar .
3. HDFC conducted an aptitude test for final year students. Around 100 students participated and the results are awaited.
4. Under the aegis of Govt. Gujarat’s UDISHA project an UDISHA CLUB has been established
5. Mock test for competitive exams organized by Career-line on 9th sept. 2008 between 9.30 to 12.00
-Approximately 200 students participated.
-Awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes to the top scorers.
6. Grooming session was held for the girls on 13/9/2008 by Frankfinn Institute. More than 100 students participated.
7. A Personality development workshop was held on 27/11/2008 for T.Y.B.A. students by frankfinn Institute.
8. A lecture was arranged by the Information Dept. Govt. of Gujarat, to provide information on immigration & opportunities to study abroad.
9. Sai Education Trust, provided carier-related information to students in December, 2008.
10. A Seminar was held on 6/12/2008 by a franchisee of Gujarat Knowledge Society ( a initiative of  the Govt. of Gujarat ) with an aim to start new course for our students to upgrade their skills. We intend to begin the
course in our campus in the next academic year. (2009-10)
11. An education fair was held on 1/12/08 to provide information to the students about the job opportunities available to them after graduation. The fair also generated income of Rs.6000/-

C.W.D.C Activities :

Under the aegis of C.W.D.C. (Women's Development Cell, Gujarat University), a Collegiate Women’s Development cell, functions at the College campus to provide assistance by empowering the girls’ studying in the college. The cell set-up in October- 2005 organizes various activities such as Lectures on Women empowerment, gender sensitization, Seminars, essay-writing, poetry recitation. The cell also provides free guidance and councelling to the girls.

Sports Activities :
1. 12 Boys and 8 Girls students participated in inter college cross country competition on 10-08-2015. Smt.S.R.Mehta Arts College became champion.
2. Girls team participated in cross country competition organized by I.P. Sprts & Events. Our college team become champion and won cash prize of Rs.10,000/-. Boys team secured second position and won & cash prize of Rs.5000/- . Vijal Makwana won & cash prize of Rs.3000/- in individual category.
3. Vaniya shital won silver medal and 3 months membership of vario club in ‘Pankathone’ organized by SBI on 25-10-2015.
4. 12 Students participated in Inter College Kabbadi and one student was selected in ‘A’ zone team on 25-10-2015.
5. 12 Students participated in Kho-Kho on 28-09-2015 and one student was selected in ‘A’ zone team.
6. 12 Students participated in volleyball and reached in semi final. Two Students got selected in Ahmedabad zone team. Sanjay Solanki participated in Inter Uni. College competition at Bhopal.

Gandhi Katha :
The Navgujarat group of colleges organized Shri Narayanbhai Desai’s GANDHI KATHA at the college campus from 6th January to 10th January 2009. This grand event was open for the public. Many prominent citizens attended the function. Some of the dignitaries, who attended the function include,

The function was beneficial to the students and the citizens in more than one way. The motive behind organizing the Katha, was an attempt at Character building, Value inculcation, awakening spirit of patriotism and to combat the growing influence of violence in the society.

An exhibition, depicting the life of Mahatma Gandhi, was also held. Paintings, photographs, books, placards were displayed to create awareness and to educate one and all about the gandhian way of life.To encourage the use of

khadi and to promote small-scale cottage industries as cherished by Gandhiji, a stall was also setup in the campus during the Gandhi katha.

Staff Activities :
Faculty development programme - The Future Workshop in progress
21 Faculty members from Navgujarat group of colleges participated in The Future Workshop,- a residential training held at Starz Club, Ahmedabad from 25th January 2013 to 27th January 2013. Under the guidance of a corporate trainer of international repute the workshop facilitated in determining the organization’s vision, mission and values.
Faculty Developement Programme
Shri Parimal Gandhi, a Corporate Trainer from ‘Academy of Human Excellence’ conducted a three-day workshop on “Seven Habits of Highly Effective people for the Faculty and Administrative Staff of the college. This workshop was meant to enhance the performance-level, efficiency and inter-personal relations of every employee. The workshop helped in creating a conducive atmosphere at work-place.

2. State level Seminar held on 5th January , 2010 jointly organized by Department of political science on ‘ Effects of Politics on the economy’.
3. Personality Development Workshop organized by Prof.Amit Trivedi in December 2009.
4. Dr. Arpita Patel delivered a lecturer on ‘ Bio-diversity awareness of Environment ‘at a college eco-club.
5. Prof.Amit Trivedi organized a work-shop for the Adminitrative Staff which was held at Sun-n-Step Club in October 2009.
6. Two Faculty members delivered lectures at B.D. Arts college as a part of Faculty Development Programme
1. Computer training on regular basis for office staff is under taken with the help of in house staff of BCA college.
2. All administrative staff have undergone training in CCC.
Research Promotional activities:-
In order to encourage research activities on the campus, an element of competition was introduced last year. The entire teaching staff was divided into five groups: Languages, Social Sciences, Economics and Statistics, Commerce and law an Computers. On the basis of a decided scheme of marking, scores were awarded for papers presented, seminars attended, papers published etc. It was decided to award cash prize to the group that scores the highest. In order to further plan and execute similar activities in the next academic year,
Rs.1000 was given to the Chairman of each group. Dr.Indira Nityanandam of the college was one of the three on the campus who was felicitated for Lifetime Achievement.
Teachers and students are encouraged to participate and present research papers at the National/
International Seminars.
Cash-prizes are awarded to the best papers on the basis of its quality and scope. The papers are Scrutinised by a panel of experts before selecting the best one.
Life-time achievement award is given to the senior teachers who have contributed immensely in research activities.
credit society:-
Navgujarat college staff co.op credit society Ltd (Registerd no. 1032):
Established on 21, January 1965 with an aim to provide financial assistance to its members in times of emergency, today the credit society has come a long way. Many of the members have benefited from it. Some of the features of the credit society are highlighted below:
Total no. of members : 80.
Loan upto the limit of Rs.3 lacs or a total of 18 salaries, whichever is less.
The loan amount to be repaid in 60 instalments.
Festival loan provided during Diwali.
Loan provided at 12% interest.
Credit society audit is certified ‘A’ for the past 7 years.
10% interest given to voluntary savings of the members for the year 2008-09.
13.5% dividend paid to the members.
The retiring members of the credit society are given welfare fund contribution.
Rs. 15000/- financial assistance provided to any member from the welfare fund, in case of emergency.

tri-lingual poetry recitation was held  in English, Gujarati and Hindi, 37 student participated in this programme. Dr. Roopalee Burke was the chief guest and judge. The event was managed by Dr. Dhanlaxmi Vatnani. Three prizes were given. Each participant was given a copy of Gandhiji’s autobiography.

‘English Week’ celebration included activities like JAM(Just a minute) literary quiz, poetry reading, speech reading etc.
An English adaptation of the popular serial ‘Balika Vadhu’ was performed by the T.Y.B.A (Eng) students.
A film ‘The Making of the Mahatma and Jane Eyre’ were shown to student to assist them in understanding the prescribed texts better.
Mock interviews were conducted in the classroom.

Department of Hindi:-

Headed by Dr. Dhanalaxmi Vatnani the Dept. of Hindi Organized various activities.

To encourage students use our national language and to promote its growth, Dept. of Hindi organizes various functions at our college campus. The activities comprises celebration of Hindi Diwas (14th September), Poetry reading, Hindi Translation, Extempore speech, literary quiz. The department also encourages Students’ participation in Seminars, inter-collegiate competitions such as Hindi exams held by Gujarat Vidyapeeth. Students win cash prizes every year in the exams held.

Department of Sanskrit:-

Headed by Dr. Tejni Munshi many activities are held in the Sanskrit department. To revive and promote the mother of all Indian languages, the students are encouraged to participate in the programmes and competitions held in the campus. The extra-curricular activities help our students to enhance their skills in the language as well as generate interest in it. Some of the activities regularly, held here, are Shlokgaan, literary debate, extempore speech, Visit to L.D. Institute of Indology and Bhoje Vidyabhavan and literary quiz.

4. An Economic Survey of People residing in Pavagadh wes held by organising an educational tour to Pavagadh on 3-09-2009.

Department of Sociology

Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) :
One of the important stake-holders in an academic institutions are the parents.Hence the PTA in its bi-annual meetings addresses issues that are of mutual importance.The expectations of the parents vis-à-vis the activities in the college, the problems faced by the students, the values integral to the progress of the college are all discussed in a frank and free manner.

Teacher’s Day :
Imitation is the best form of Flattery. Students use this dictum when they don the role of the teacher in celebrating the birthday of our ex President Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on 5th Sept. as Teacher’s Day.The eagerness and enthusiasm with which the job is undertaken is ample proof that the future world of academics is in safe hands.The entire college come forward and appreciates the efforts of the Student Teachers.

An equally traditional celebration is that of “Gurupurnima” when past & present students acknowledge their indebtedness and gratitude to their teachers by giving them flowers and tilak.

Book Club :
Book Club – Samvaad:-
“Reading make a full man”, said Bacon. To share ideas and reminiscence of reading books on a variety of subjects the teaching faculty meets once a month to discuss a book that has appealed to one. A presentation is made by one staff member and the discussion that follows provide ample scope for the dissemination of knowledge as well as theories and their application. The choice of books is left to the presenter and hence the variety is as wide as the number of members. Recent sessions have been on Bhavbhuti’s Uttaramcharita, Aravinda Adiga’s “The White Tiger” etc.

Student Welfare :
Counselling Center – Aasha:-
To be heard when you are the only hope to any individual when in despair, doubt, pain, defeat or dejection. Under the able guidance of 3 senior teachers, students are provided confidential counseling for social, academic, personal, professional or family problems. Timely help and guidance have helped many students away from wrong decisions and hasty actions.
Personality Development Course:-
Mere bookish knowledge is no guarantee to a successful career. With this in mind a 3-day workshop on Personality Development is conducted every term for the final year students. One of our alumnus Amit Trivedi, conducts this highly popular program in which through games & exercises individual & group activities, the hidden talents of the students is given a chance to blossom & flourish. A Submission before the Exam was held to help students manage.
To help bright students fare better, teachers identify the top five students in each class and spend quality time with them- discussing question papers, solving problems, clearing doubts, suggesting extra reading material, correcting answers etc.This has contributed to an improvement in the over-all academic performance.

Corporate Social Responsibility:-

As part of our Corporate Social Responsibility it has been decided to adopt one ward of a serving police personnel, one of the most neglected sections of society is neither recognized nor appreciated in our society. It is hoped that such gestures will help bridge the distance between the common man and police force.
In times of natural disaster or man-made disturbances the staff and students of the campus along with a handsome contribution from the Trust have attempted to help both in terms of money and material as well as service. Notable among these are contributions for the Kargil soldiers, earthquake victims, flood ravaged villages and victims of communal riots.

College Magazine :
Smt. S.R. Mehta Arts College publishes a yearly magazine ‘Ojas’, showcasing our students’ talents and scholarly writings by our Faculty. It also records collective achievements and significant events on and off-campus. Faculty and students regularly contribute articles for the magazine.

Poor Boy's Library (PBL) :
Needy students are provided free text-books under this scheme. The PBL Committee invites application from the needy students, along with the proof to ascertain their family annual income. The documents are scrutinized by the committee before the list of the needy students is shortlisted. The students are provided text-books, which they are required to return after the completion of their Annual Exam. To ensure maximum benefit to the needy students, the books are purchased under this scheme, as per demand.Approximately, 300 students are benefitted under this scheme, every year.

Core committee :
In order to ensure that bench marking is achieved, that decisions pertaining to the campus are taken by a committee consisting of members of all the colleges, the core committee was constituted 3 years ago.

Meeting every term, the committee discusses major issues and provides direction to the activities of the colleges.

Annual Day is held every year in the month of February. The Principal presents the Annual Report. Prizes/medals/ certificates are distributed to meritorious students for their excellence in academic, cultural, sports and other activities. With a view to encourage and motivate our students this function is held religiously. Moreover, a well-known dignitary is invited as the chief-guest. This year, Shri P. K. Laheri (I.A.S) gave a highly motivating and inspiring speech to the students.

Saptadhara :
The following activities comes under the Gujarat Government sponsored Swarnim Gujarat programme. These activities mainly focus on the overall development of the students.
Latest Saptadhara Activities
• Theatre workshop held at the College Campus in December 2009 under the guidance of noted theatre    personality Prof. Saumya Joshi
• Translation workshop in English, Hindi, & Gujarati was held on 18-20 January.
Debate and discussions will be held on issues such as communal, Indian culture, global and environmental.
Sarjanaatmak Abhivyakti dhara
  Activities to develop skills in oratory, writing and translation are encouraged.
Kala Kaushalya dhara
  Information and Training provided to develop students’ skill in artistic painting, handicrafts etc.
Natya dhara
Training for students in the varied forms of drama such as one-act play, skit, mime, mono-acting etc. shall be provided.
Geet-Sangeet Nrutya dhara
The hidden talent of Students can be brought out through dance, songs etc.
Vyayam Yog Khelkhud dhara
The Programmes held here focus on the physical health of the students. Yoga and pranayama workshop is held.
Samudayik Sevadhara
  Activities to inculcate interest in rural development, national unity and academics, economics and social issues.

As per the Gujarat University guidelines, the Students’ Union is constituted every year on the basis of merit. Two meritorious students from each division of FY BA, SY BA and TY BA are selected as class representatives. The Student from TY BA securing highest mark is selected as the General Secretary (G.S.) and the girl student from SY BA securing highest marks is selected as the Ladies Representative(L. R.) All the college activities such as Academic, Sports, Cultural, Library, Discipline etc. come under the Student’ Union. A meeting is held every month and issues related to the overall growth and development of Students are discussed before its’ implementation. The Union is constantly concerned about improving the academic standards and thus proving beneficial in the overall development of the student.

Guest Lectures :
Periodic Guest Lectures are organized for the staff and students. Over-all development requires constant exposure to a variety of subjects and view points. Some recent Speakers were:
