In 1963, a few years after the formation of the state of Gujarat, Prin. M. C. Shah founded the Navgujarat Arts & Commerce College. The western parts of Ahmedabad was just beginning to develop and a morning College which would cater to the growing middle class was of paramount importance.

With a handful of teachers and a few hundred students, the campus has now grown to a well-established and recognized hub of academic activity. In 1963 the two college of Arts & Commerce were born out of the original one. In 1995 Navgujarat Arts College was renamed Smt. S. R. Mehta Arts College in honor of the philanthropist Smt. Shushilaben of Mumbai.

Today the college has a student strength of 1500 students. A firm belief in value based education and deep sense of social commitment has been the hallmark of the college.
